When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I see people smoking, especially young people, I think it is a shame because of all the evidence we have that smoking is not only harmful, but fatal.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel that people who smoke just don't care about the effect it will have not only on their life, but on the lives of those that love them. How can they be so selfish to think they are the only ones effected by their choice to smoke (2nd hand smoking aside).

How_I_quit: My daughter keeps telling me that I should quit, and I know that for myself, but this second time around (I actually quit smoking for 11 years and started again) seems a little harder. I will be trying to have a baby soon, and I know that will give me the strength I need to quit, and quit forever this time!

Life_affirming_activity_2: hiking
Life_affirming_activity_3: biking

Life_affirming_activity_5: enjoying time with friends
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: I am completed bewildered when I see a young mother smoking in her car with all the windows up and her children in the backseat.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel anger toward the mother, and so sorry for those kids who are trapped in such a small space with no place to go and smoking with their mother. That is just what they are doing every time they take a breath. Why can't these women see this !?!?!?
How_I_quit: When I was four months pregnant I woke up one morning after being at a party (I didn't drink) where everyone, including myelf had been smoking. I usually had a cigarette right after breakfast, but the taste in my mouth and the smell of the smoke that still lingered, wouldn't let me light up. I never wanted another cigarete during the rest of my pregnancy. However, three years later when my father was dying, I remember saying to someone, "I wish that I smoked....I need a cigarette." But, I didn't have one, and still haven't. It was hard when I first quit, and the urge for a smoke lasted for a long time, but I didn't give in, and 35 years later, I'm so glad that I didn't.

The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I wish everyone who wanted to quit smoking could.
How_I_quit: I quit smoking almost two years at the request of my husband. I quit cold turkey because I believe that is the only way to succeed. It is all or nothing. Trying to cut down the amount the smoke just opens the door to make excuses to smoke more. I have to say that is true that things taste and smell different. I wish anyone who tries to quit smoking success and those who succeed congradulations.

The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel that there is no real reason to smoke, and that there is help out there for you if you are having troubles quitting. I feel if my nephews see everyone smoking around them that they too will become interested in taking up such a habit. I feel like

The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate:
How_I_quit: I quit when I turned 30, I was not an avid smoker but would smoke on occasion and afterwards I always felt quilty. I know it was time to quit. I just didn't smoke anymore. I also watched my gradmother pass away from lung cancer.

Life_affirming_activity_3: going for rides in the country
Life_affirming_activity_4: biking
Life_affirming_activity_5: relaxing on my garden swing
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: One of my friends is in poor health; among other ailments, she doesn't breath in enough oxygen so must use an oxygen tank. Unfortunately she also smokes. I see her having difficulty breathing, I hear her awful smokers cough, but still she smokes. Because smoking is so addictive, people continue the habit even though it is a health risk.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel sad for those struggling with the smoking habit, and mad at the tobacco companies (all they care about is $$$.)

Life_affirming_activity_2: art making and creative pursuits
Life_affirming_activity_3: truly listening to another person with undivided attention
Life_affirming_activity_4: practicing thankfulness
Life_affirming_activity_5: physical exercise
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I see others using tobacco I think about the cost and consequences of the behavior and the bondage of addiction under which they are placing themselves. Sometimes I muse about the absurdity of placing a stick of burning weeds in their mouth to suck on so they can momentarily calm their nerves, or fill whatever hole the lack of nicotine has dug in their psyche and body.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: Sad. Helpless to do anything. Frustrated.
How_I_quit: In a difficult time of my life I was befriended and supported by a family in my church that did not smoke. When I was at their home they would get me an ash tray and allow me to smoke. As I saw the ashes fall inadvertently on their clean rugs, as I saw the "dirtiness" of the habit against the home they kept so neat, I resolved to stop. I started by switching to a pipe. (A manly thing!) It was ironic however, that when my birthday came and the daughter of the household which I was then dating decided to give me a new pipe as a gift, I had decided to quit smoking altogether. Why did I quit? I knew it was bad for my health (I had actually been a respiratory therapist), I was supported by loving friends, I made a decision and, and this I sincerely believe, God intervened with His help. Thank God that I quit over 35 years ago!

Life_affirming_activity_4: Riding my bike on the canal path in Lockport
Life_affirming_activity_5: Taking my dog, Bailey Boo, for a nice, leisurely walk
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I see others smoking I think about my favorite aunt who died from lung cancer. I think about how hard it was for her to quit smoking and then, 11 years after she quit, she developed lung cancer and died two years later. I think about how much her family and friends miss her. I think about what a tragic and useless loss it is to everybody who knew her.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel angry and cheated and powerless and frustrated and lonesome and very, very sad.

The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: Glad that I have stopped.
How_I_quit: I quit to be able to breath, taste, and smell better. I quit cold turkey, much to the annoyance of everyone around me.

Life_affirming_activity_2: taking cool pictures
Life_affirming_activity_3: playing boardgames with my friends
Life_affirming_activity_4: cooking dinner for a group
Life_affirming_activity_5: spending time with my family
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: another one bites the dust

First_Name: Stan
My_relationship_to_smoking: Never Smoked
Life_affirming_activity_1: motorcycling
Life_affirming_activity_2: travel
Life_affirming_activity_3: family
Life_affirming_activity_4: love
Life_affirming_activity_5: wife
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: Don't you realize how much money you are wasting?
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: Angry - because the money could have been used in more constructive ways.

First_Name: Susan
My_relationship_to_smoking: In memory of someone effected by smoking
Life_affirming_activity_1: singing and dancing
Life_affirming_activity_2: calling or meeting a friend
Life_affirming_activity_3: doing and sharing (anything) with a friend
Life_affirming_activity_4: doing something helpful for someone else
Life_affirming_activity_5: sharing joy in daily activities (cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc)
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I think about how we used to tolerate smoky rooms, buses, train, stores, airplanes, living spaces, doctor's offices (!) I am stunned how much it has affected our lives. Allergies, choices about occupation (who wanted to work in a place that made them sneeze, cough and wheeze, their eyes tear, their throat hurt, their nose cringe, and their hair and clothes smell like smoke....) even if you yourself did not smoke.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: When I reflect upon those thoughts, and that we have lifted that inconsideration to each other and to children, I am hopeful that we can continue to become more considerate of ourselves individually and of others, of animals, and of our home... our planet.

First_Name: Steve
My_relationship_to_smoking: In memory of someone effected by smoking
Life_affirming_activity_1: Attending Mass
Life_affirming_activity_2: Spending time with my immediate family, altogether or one on one
Life_affirming_activity_3: Getting important projects done at work or at home
Life_affirming_activity_4: Playing golf solo or with friends
Life_affirming_activity_5: Working out
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: It's incredible that with all that's known about smoking that people are still doing it. What an injustice to fellow workers who are working while smokers take yet another break to smoke. How much is that costing? Add up all that time you spend smoking and you could have a hell of a workout!
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: The addictive strength of the smoking habit must be overwhelming if it forces people to act in such a manner. Where is the willpower of smokers if they can't overcome what is such an incredibly costly, unhealthy habit?
How_I_quit: Having been athletically active all my life, I knew it wasn't good for me. It was just something to do to socialize when I was young. I went out really late with some friends one evening and just decided at the end of the evening to call it quits. I never went back to it. This was a LONG time ago - 30 plus years. I can't imagine smoking now with all the public prohibitions that smokers have to put up with.

First_Name: Diane
My_relationship_to_smoking: Ex-Smoker
Life_affirming_activity_1: Playing games with my daughters
Life_affirming_activity_2: Building a Habitat house
Life_affirming_activity_3: Playing with my daughter's dog
Life_affirming_activity_4: Gazing into the night sky
Life_affirming_activity_5: Volunteering at Kevin Guest House
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: if they could only see how awful they look. Young people smoking are very insecure people or they would not need the comfort of a cigarette to keep them company and make them look important.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel pity for the smoker.
How_I_quit: Every time I took a deep breath I had a pain in my shoulder. Although it probably was unrelated to smoking, I just said, "That's it. I am quitting." I quit cold turkey which is, in my opinion, the only way someone will truly quit. There is no such thing as cutting back until you quit entirely.

First_Name: Mary
My_relationship_to_smoking: Ex-Smoker
Life_affirming_activity_1: Playing with my Son
Life_affirming_activity_2: Tae Kwon Do
Life_affirming_activity_3: Reading
Life_affirming_activity_4: Visiting with Friends
Life_affirming_activity_5: A good laugh
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I think about smoking, it disgusts me. I believe it is a terrible habit and I wish more people would quit and stop making excuses for it.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I do not like being anywhere near smoke or smelling it. I can't believe more people would not want to quit now with the price of cigarettes. There is nothing good that comes out of smoking.
How_I_quit: I was a smoke when you party type of smoker. When your young, smoking and drinking seem to go hand in hand and make you feel cool, but once you grow up, you realize that is not true. It does nothing but destroy your lungs, age your face, make your clothes stink and it is an expensive habit.

First_Name: Jerry
My_relationship_to_smoking: Never Smoked
Life_affirming_activity_1: Reclining outside and reading
Life_affirming_activity_2: Sitting on Three Sisters Island at Niagara Falls
Life_affirming_activity_3: Tending plants
Life_affirming_activity_4: Cooking with herbs you've grown yourself
Life_affirming_activity_5: Mailing a handwritten note to someone
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: that it such an unhealthy habit and how distateful everything surrounding it is - coughing, smell, breath, teeth etc
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: sorry for the person smoking and don't understand why they always say "I wish I could quit" but they don't

First_Name: Amanda

Life_affirming_activity_2: shopping
Life_affirming_activity_3: being outdoors
Life_affirming_activity_4: looking up at the stars
Life_affirming_activity_5: feeling the warm sunshine
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: how sad it makes me to know that people CHOOSE to harm themselves.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: sad, and angry. As a nurse, I know that life is precious, do not waste it on smoking.

First_Name: Elizabeth
My_relationship_to_smoking: In memory of someone effected by smoking

Life_affirming_activity_2: Escaping reality with movies or books
Life_affirming_activity_3: Spending time with any and all animals
Life_affirming_activity_4: Catching up with family and friends
Life_affirming_activity_5: wiccan activities
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: Do they realize what they are doing to themselves? Have they ever been thru the loss of losing someone due to the effects of smoking? Have they ever watched a love one suffer, even AFTER quitting. Only to watch the other half continue to smoke...just not right in front of him. Don't people realize they're affecting everyone, not just themselves. How can anyone be THAT selfish!?!?
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: So angry. Wishing there was a way to just make people stop. Wouldn't that in turn help lead to a cure? Granted, it's too late for so many...but think of all the other lives it would save!

Life_affirming_activity_3: reading a good book.
Life_affirming_activity_4: finishing my degree.
Life_affirming_activity_5: working on the Air Force Base.
When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I see others smoking, I feel repulsed. Me and my friends have never touched the stuff, and for that I am grateful, because three close family members have all had cancer in the past, probably tied to them being ex-smokers. Not only is it repulsive, but when you smoke you don't only hurt yourself but EVERYONE around you. My big focus with my writing has been on stricter tobacco laws, because the government enforces laws which hurt no one but the person committing the crime (such as seatbelt and helmet laws), but not something that effects everyone? And to all the smokers - look how much money you could be saving if you weren't smoking a pack a day - say you spend $5 per pack, that's like 1800 dollar menu cheeseburgers. Save the money for gasoline or something worthwhile. Spend an evening with your kids, without increasing their risk for earaches and sore throats and asthma.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: Depressed about the way society has become.

The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: sad, because I have seen what tobacco can accomplish and what you can accomplish without tobacco is nothing short of spectacular. If only everyone could see that.

When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I smoked I thought I smoked because it satisfied an earge. I did not know what earge was being satisfied till I quit, and I missed the smoke entering my throat and lungs filling, filing- I missed this the most.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: Now, when I think of those thoght about wanting that "filling", I think that the earge I was satisfying was a deep earge to be filled form the inside. Now I have something that fills me more than anything ever coud- Jesus Almighty- and I FEEL free from those thoughts when I smoked.
How_I_quit: I quit, after a year trying and returning. The way I quite was I had moved and told myself I could start new. I avoided all places where I could light up or be tempted to bum or buy smokes. I was fortunate because all my new friends were non-smokers so it was easier stay away from smoking. During my final success to quite, the best secret to my success was this advice- "when you want a cigarette, count to 15 and the earge will leave".. so my basic tool was to wait fro the earges to pass. If that did not work I would chew gum or sour patch kids.

When_I_see_others_smoking_I_think: When I think about how I used to smoke... YUCK! I had bad breath, and couldn't run up the stairs without coughing. My car smelled. My clothes smelled. I'm glad I quit.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: I feel proud of myself that I quit before I really became terribly addicted. I'm happy now.
How_I_quit: I remember having a breakthrough thought one day, after a difficult run, "Okay, I can smoke, or I can run as much as I want and really excel at it. I choose to be healthy, and run." I had to change some things about my environment, and be honest and straightforward to my friends at the time that I quit. I told them not to offer me cigarettes, and even if I did ask for one, not to give it to me. I cleaned out my car big time. I gave myself little rewards every day I didn't smoke. I didn't hang out with people when they were smoking; I'd walk away, or wait for them somewhere else until they were done. Once you quit smoking, you realize more little things like how you smell better now, etc. It's totally worth it. Before I got pregnant, I was running up to 10 miles at one time! I feel very healthy:)

I don't want him to miss out on that plus I don't want his sons and I have to live without him.
The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: When I think those thoughts, I feel sad. I also feel angry that he was introduced to smoking at such a young impressionable age.

The_feelings_those_thoughts_generate: Grateful that I quit. Sad for those who are still smoking. I hope they are able to realize that quitting smoking is possible. I did it, so can they.
How_I_quit: I wanted to quit for a long time but just kept reaching for a smoke out of habit. Smoking was a way of life, I really never challenged it for very long. Eventually I became more aware of how smoking was dominating my life and it made me sick to think I was being controlled by such a thing. I began to pray that I would be able to quit, then about two weeks later I became sick with bronchitis, (one of many times I had been sick with bronchitis!). I felt miserable. Then it occurred to me that the cigarettes weren't helping. I tossed them out in anger and disgust and made a conscious effort to stay away from them daily. After about 3 weeks I felt alive, free and like I had overcome the cravings!  It was a cool experience.

back to TRADE SMOKING FOR LIFE!
